Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
