In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
