Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
